Despite recent
advances in vertebrate model systems, the technology for genetic manipulation
in the fruit fly drosophila is by far the most sophisticated. The fly facility has a state-of-the-art set up for
maintenance and generation of transgenic flies and a dedicated fly food production
unit (Nectar). Apart from constant use by research groups, the facility offers
training. The key activities of this facility include the use of genetically
modified flies to reveal gene function in development, as well as the use of
flies to study the function of genes from other organisms, including human. The
function and interaction of disease genes involved in cancer, and
neurodegenerative disorders are modeled here, and studies include drug
screening for molecules that counteract the effects of specific disease
mutations.
