LaCONES
was step-up in 1998 with focus on conservation of
endangered species (like the lions, tigers and other
rare species on the verge of extinction) through the use of
biotechnological interventions. This unique laboratory is a joint venture
of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), the Department of
Biotechnology, Government of India, New Delhi, and the Central Zoo
Authority, Govt. of India, New Delhi.
LaCONES focuses on developing technology for
cloning of extremely rare species, monitoring genetic
variations, establishing gene and cell banks, studying semen quality for
selection of animals for breeding, and takes up in-vitro
fertilization for conservation purposes.
